How to Back Up Your Own Social Media Videos
Your social accounts hold years of work. If an account is hacked, suspended by mistake or a platform shuts down a feature, those videos can disappear overnight. A simple backup routine protects you.
Use the official export first
Most platforms let you request a copy of your data:
- Instagram and Facebook: Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions, then Download your information.
- TikTok: Settings, then Account, then Download your data.
- YouTube: Google Takeout lets you export your channel videos.
These exports can take hours or days and arrive as large ZIP files, but they are complete.
Save individual videos as you go
For day-to-day backups, download each video right after you post it. Paste the link into SocialMate, choose the best quality and save it. It takes less than a minute.
Organise your files
- Create one folder per platform and one subfolder per month.
- Name files with the date and topic, for example 2026-10-28-product-launch.mp4.
- Keep the caption and hashtags in a text file next to the video.
Follow the 3-2-1 rule
Keep 3 copies of important files, on 2 different types of storage (for example your computer and an external drive), with 1 copy off-site, such as Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud.
Back up your best performers
Mark the videos that performed best. They are worth reposting, remixing or turning into ads later.
Try it now: go to the SocialMate home page, paste any public video link and pick your quality.
