MP4 vs MP3 vs M4A: Which Format Should You Choose?

When you download from social media you will see file types like MP4, MP3, M4A, WEBM and OPUS. Here is what they mean in plain words.

MP4: the universal video format

MP4 is a container that holds video and usually sound. It plays on every phone, computer, smart TV and editing app. If you want a video, choose MP4.

MP3: the universal audio format

MP3 contains only sound. It is perfect for music, sound effects and voice clips, and it plays everywhere, including car stereos and old devices.

M4A: better sound in a smaller file

M4A is the audio part of an MP4, usually in AAC format. At the same file size it often sounds better than MP3. It plays on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. Choose M4A for good quality audio, MP3 if you need maximum compatibility.

WEBM and OPUS

These are open formats used heavily by YouTube. WEBM is a video container and OPUS is an efficient audio codec. They play in modern browsers and VLC, but some phones, older TVs and editors struggle with them. SocialMate prefers MP4 whenever a matching version exists.

Quick decision guide

  • Want to watch or share a video: MP4.
  • Want a song or sound on any device: MP3.
  • Want the best audio quality on a modern phone: M4A.
  • Editing in a professional app: the MP4 with the highest resolution you are allowed to use.

What about file size?

A 3 minute song is around 3 to 7 MB as MP3 or M4A. The same length of video is 10 MB at 360p and can be over 100 MB at 1080p. If storage is tight, choose audio or a lower video quality.
