How to Save Videos on iPhone and iPad

On iPhone and iPad, downloaded videos do not go straight to the Photos app. They are saved in the Files app first. Here is the complete process.

Step 1: Download with Safari

Open SocialMate in Safari, paste the video link and tap Download next to the quality you want. Safari may ask “Do you want to download…?”. Tap Download.

Step 2: Find the file

Tap the download arrow in the Safari address bar to see your downloads, or open the Files app and go to Browse, then On My iPhone (or iCloud Drive), then Downloads.

Step 3: Save it to Photos

  1. Open the video in the Files app.
  2. Tap the Share button.
  3. Choose Save Video.

The video now appears in your Photos library and can be shared to any app.

Change where Safari saves downloads

Go to Settings, then Apps, then Safari, then Downloads (on older iOS: Settings, then Safari, then Downloads) and choose iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.

Troubleshooting

  • The video opens and plays instead of downloading: long-press the Download button and choose Download Linked File.
  • Not enough space: pick a lower quality such as 720p.
  • Using Chrome on iPhone: Chrome saves to Files too. Tap the three dots, then Downloads, to find the file.

Audio files

MP3 and M4A files also go to Files. You can play them there or import them into GarageBand or a music app.

Try it now: go to the SocialMate home page, paste any public video link and pick your quality.
