How to Download Facebook Videos in HD

Facebook hosts millions of videos, from recipes and news clips to business ads and family moments. The app lets you save videos to a list inside Facebook, but not to your device. Here is how to download a public Facebook video as an MP4 file.

Where the video can come from

  • Public pages and profiles
  • Public groups
  • Facebook Watch
  • Facebook Reels
  • Recorded live streams that were published publicly

Step 1: Get the video link

Click the Share button under the video and choose Copy link. If you are on a computer, you can also open the video on its own page and copy the address. Links that look like facebook.com/watch/?v=…, facebook.com/reel/… or fb.watch/… all work.

Step 2: Paste it into SocialMate

Open the Facebook downloader, paste the link and press Download.

Step 3: Pick HD or SD

Facebook often stores two versions:

  • HD (usually 720p or 1080p): sharper, larger file.
  • SD: smaller and faster to download, good for slow connections.

If you only see SD, the video was uploaded or stored in standard definition and no HD version exists.

Why some Facebook videos cannot be downloaded

  • The post is only visible to friends or members of a private group.
  • The video was removed or the link is broken.
  • The content is protected, for example some licensed shows.

Ideas for businesses

If you run a Facebook page, downloading your own videos is useful for reposting on TikTok and Reels, keeping an archive of ads that performed well, and sharing clips with your team for review.

A quick reminder

Download only videos you own or have permission to use, and credit creators when you share their work.

Ready to try it? Open the Facebook downloader, paste your link and choose the quality you want.
