How to Save Instagram Reels to Your Phone or Computer
Instagram is built for watching inside the app. You can bookmark a Reel to your Saved folder, but that does not give you an actual video file. If you need the file for editing, presenting or keeping a backup of your own content, here is how to get it.
What you can save
- Reels in HD MP4.
- Feed videos and IGTV-style long videos.
- Carousel posts with several photos and videos, each item listed separately.
- Photos in their original size.
Only public posts can be downloaded. Content from private accounts stays private.
Step 1: Copy the link
On the Reel or post, tap the paper plane (Share) icon or the three dots and choose Copy link. On instagram.com, open the post and copy the browser address.
Step 2: Paste and search
Open the SocialMate Instagram downloader, paste the link and press Download. In a few seconds you will see a preview and the available files.
Step 3: Save the file
Choose the video or photo and tap Download. On Android it goes to your Downloads folder and appears in the Gallery. On iPhone, Safari saves it in the Files app; open it and use Share, then Save Video to move it to Photos.
What quality to expect
Instagram usually stores Reels at up to 1080 pixels wide. Older or heavily compressed uploads may be lower. SocialMate shows the true resolution next to each file.
Common problems
- “We could not find a downloadable video” usually means the account is private, the post was deleted, or the link is incomplete. Copy the link again from the Share menu.
- Story links expire after 24 hours unless saved as a highlight.
- If a post contains several items, scroll the result list to see all of them.
Use Reels responsibly
Saving your own Reels or a clip a brand sent you for approval is perfectly normal. Reposting other people’s Reels without permission can break Instagram rules and copyright law. Ask first and credit the creator.
